(COIMBRA, PORTUGAL) Portuguese lacrosse team, ACM Lacrosse, based in Coimbra, hosted Portugal’s first official lacrosse clinic February 13-14. 21 men and women came out for this seminal event that included players from Coimbra, Lisbon and one Portuguese player who currently lives in Scotland. The clinician, provided by ELF (European Lacrosse Federation), was Canadian coach, Kyle Witt currently of England’s Welwyn Warriors, and formerly of Drexel University (USA). Coach Witt ran a clinic described by the participants as “a great success.”
The first morning of the clinic, Saturday, was dedicated to basic skills such as throwing, catching, draws and face-offs. By Saturday afternoon and Sunday, the sessions advanced to covering more tactical aspects of the game. The attendees learned formations, strategies, fast breaks and the basics of offense and defense.
Not everything was hard work as the group enjoyed a Saturday night event when they attended an enjoyable meal together. Naturally there was much telling of new lacrosse stories and general laughter and good cheer was shared by all.
Portuguese Lacrosse hopes that this is the start of a vibrant future for lacrosse in Portugal. Now that the first team to be founded, ACM Lacrosse is on its feet, there is great hope that the next team will start up in Lisbon and from there, who knows?
