(ELF Release) The Czech Republic will host the Women’s European Championships in 2015 (WEC15). The dates of the WEC15 are set for 6-16 August 2015. (See: FIL Events Calendar)

Stephanie Migchelsen, Secretary for the European Lacrosse Federation (ELF) made the announcement, “I’m very pleased to announce that the results of the vote for hosting the Women’s European Championships 2015 are in and the championships will be held in the Czech Republic.”

“We’d like to congratulate both organisations [Czech Republic and Israel] for outstanding bids; both were thoroughly prepared and offered exciting opportunities for national teams and officials.”

Migchelsen explained, “Before the 5 April deadline, we received votes from 21 countries, 10 for the Czech Republic, nine for Israel and two abstentions. In the interest of full disclosure, we received two additional votes after the deadline, one in favour of each bid, so the result would have been the same.”

“We’d like to congratulate both organisations for outstanding bids; both were thoroughly prepared and offered exciting opportunities for national teams and officials. We’d also like to thank all the NGBs (National Governing Body) who took the time to vote and have their say in this event,” Migchelsen concluded.

The European Championships have traditionally included both men’s and women’s teams. However, due to phenomenal growth in recent years, the ELF has decided to hold the men’s and women’s championships separately.

According to Migchelsen, “There there were 29 teams from across Europe participating at EC12 in Amsterdam and considering the amount of growth we’ve seen in Europe, it was becoming increasingly harder to find venues large enough to accommodate all the games without stretching the length of the tournament.” Migchelsen explained the ELF’s decision, “At our annual general meeting that year, the NGB’s voted to split men’s and women’s tournaments and to have the European Championships two years after the World Championships, thus WEC in 2015 after the 2013 FIL Women’s World Cup and the MEC in 2016 after the upcoming 2014 Men’s World Championship in Denver.”
