Coquitlam preps for upcoming Men’s U19 World Championship

(Coquitlam) Canada is currently preparing for the FIL Men’s U19 World Lacrosse Championships to take place 7-16 July 2016 in Coquitlam (just outside of Vancouver), British Columbia.

As of this publish date, ten teams have committed to attend. They include seven-time defending champion USA, six-time runner-up Canada, one-time silver medalist Australia, along with U19 world championship tournament regulars England, Finland and Germany and newcomers Ireland, Israel, Hong Kong and Colombia. The CLA expects that more teams will be announced in the coming weeks.

The venue for the championship will be the Coquitlam Town Centre Park, which features four artificial turf fields and two natural grass fields. Main games will be played at Percy Perry Stadium with Ted Fridge Field, Dominic Mobilio Field and Cunnings Field also being utilized.

In conjunction with the U19 worlds, Coquitlam will also be hosting a 2016 World Youth Tournament for U19 Girls – July 9-11, 2016 and U15 Boys – July 13-15, 2016. For more info go to:

Kevin Dugan Receives FIL Development Award

(TORONTO, ONTARIO) Kevin Dugan, a longtime Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) development clinician, was presented with a 2015 FIL Development Award on September 27th, 2015, for his contributions to the growth of the sport worldwide. Making the presentation during halftime of the 2015 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship was FIL President, Stan Cockerton, and FIL’s Director of Development, Tom Hayes.

Dugan has been involved with lacrosse development since 2007, working to grow the game of lacrosse and improve the lives of thousands of men, women and children on numerous continents.

“Kevin has been doing this for a long time,” explains Tom Hayes. “His passion and commitment to lacrosse development has resulted in the launch of lacrosse programs in Jamaica, Kenya, and Uganda … Kevin also founded Fields of Growth, a non-profit organization that works to harness the passion of the lacrosse community to provide positive social impact through global leadership development and service.” Hayes concluded, “It’s time Kevin receives the recognition he deserves for the work he’s done over the past decade to grow the game.”

FIL Approves Turkey as Full Member

(TORONTO, ONTARIO) The Federation of International Lacrosse has granted full membership privileges to the Turkey Lacrosse Association (TLA). The TLA was founded to educate, develop and disseminate information about the sport of lacrosse in the Republic of Turkey.

“We’re honored to announce that the Turkey Lacrosse Association has become a full member of the Federation of International Lacrosse,” said FIL Vice President Steve Stenersen. “The development of lacrosse in Turkey has been a wonderful example of the sport’s growing international appeal, and we are thankful for the passion of Turkish Lacrosse Association founder Patrick Dougherty and so many others who were part of making this milestone possible.”

Canada Wins 4th Straight WILC Gold

Canada’s world dominance in box lacrosse continues.

A 12-8 victory over the Iroquois Nationals on Sunday earned Canada its fourth consecutive world indoor championship and stretched its all-time record to 23-0.

Curtis Dickson scored four goals, Shawn Evans and Dan Dawson two each and Zack Greer, Dhane Smith Steve Priolo and Stephan Leblanc one each for Canada.

It was 3-3 after one quarter, Canada led 6-5 after two and 8-6 after three in front of a Carrier Dome crowd of 10,421, a new record for a WILC championship.

Iroquois scorers were Jeff Shattler and Randy Staats, with two each, Johnny Powless, Miles Thompson, Lyle Thompson and Jerome Thompson.

In the first three World Indoor Lacrosse Championships, the medal winners were the same each time — the Canadians, the Iroquois and the Americans finished in that order. And after the first medal-round game, Team USA kept possession of the bronze medal with a 15-4 win over Israel on Sunday afternoon in the Carrier Dome.
