Czech Republic brings experience to WILC2015
– Jamie Plunkett | Contributor to WILC2015.com

(WILC2015.COM) The Czech Republic, who are ranked fourth in FIL World Indoor competition, are by far the most experienced European team attending WILC2015. On the backs of primarily homegrown talent from the longest running European domestic league, the Czechs have climbed the indoor rankings since their seventh-place debut in 2007, taking down Team England in 2011 to establish their place as an indoor powerhouse.

NLL Hall of Famer Jim Veltman is back behind the Czech Republic bench for the third time. The CLax president and teacher by trade is a perfect fit for the Czech’s. With his lacrosse knowledge and ability to teach developing players.

The Czech’s will get a good look at the new and upcoming countries when they see action against Ireland, Finland and Israel in the Euro Box Invitational 17-20 April 2015.

Team Canada Names WILC2015 Training Roster

(CANADIAN LACROSSE ASSOCIATION) Five months from the opening game of the 2015 FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship (WILC), the Canadian Lacrosse Association (CLA) and Team Canada Lacrosse announces its 37-man national training roster.

The 37 Canadian players, selected by Head Coach Eddie Comeau and his 2015 Team Canada coaching staff, will come together this summer for final selection and will look for a competitive opportunity and more training time prior to the start of the Worlds event.

The applications the CLA received for the 2015 Senior Men’s Indoor National Team is a true testament to the depth of extremely talented and skilled lacrosse players there are across the country. “The coaching and scouting staff and I were extremely impressed by the quality of players in our selection pool,” said Comeau. “We had tough decisions to make to narrow down this field to the current group. We will continue to watch and evaluate each candidate as we move towards our final roster of 23 players.”

Keogh, McBride headline Ireland’s WILC2015 roster

(WILC2015 NEWS) A pair of NLL veterans — Syracuse University grad Steven Keogh and 13-year pro Andrew McBride — headline Ireland’s roster as new additions to jolt the seventh-ranked world indoor team heading into the 2015 Championships in Syracuse.

Ireland will once again be coached by Jeff Dowling, who also serves as Exec. VP and Director of Lacrosse Operations of C-Lax. Dowling will be assisted by Tom Howe and Geoff (Abe) Conn.

“After seeing the increase in talent level at our tryout camp in October from where it was four years ago, we are extremely encouraged about our prospects at the 2015 World Games,” said Dowling. “We had to make some tough decisions at every position and truly believe that we will be a much more balanced team than we were in 2011. Adding players like Stephen and Andrew that compete at the highest level of our sport will be a big boost for our players and we expect that the growth of the sport in Ireland will also be greatly influenced by their participation.”

Wray, Keluskey to lead Finland at first World Indoors

(WILC2015.COM) When Team Finland makes their debut at the 2015 World Indoor Lacrosse Championships at Onondaga Nation and Syracuse, a pair of familiar faces to the indoor lacrosse community will be behind the bench.

Canadian Devan Wray is the new head coach of Team Finland Indoor Lacrosse, while Tracey Keluskey joins Wray as an assistant coach in the Finns debut. Wray, the former assistant coach of Edmonton Rush, thinks that the Finns will have a good chance to surprise people in the Word Indoor Lacrosse Championships next year.

“Devan is a perfect fit for us,” said Matti Tähkäpää, the Chairman of the Finnish Lacrosse Association. “He is a man of action who has a solid background in field lacrosse as well. Finland has so far focused more on field, so we were trying to find a coach who knows the both games and can make the transfer from the turf to the rink possible.”

Wray and Keluskey share a key role in leading the Finns to the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships as well as in developing the game in Finland in the future.

Israel to participate in European Box Invitational

The Israel men’s national indoor team will hold its’ final selection and training camp in April in conjunction with the 2015 European Box Invitational at LCC Radotín near Prague, Czech Republic.

The eight-team event, held from April 17-20, is primarily designed for national teams which are preparing for the 2015 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship. Teams participating in the event will play one full 60-minute (4×15), stoppage time, FIL regulation match per day, to best replicate the experience of participating in the World Championships.

Game Schedule
Game recaps at 2015WILC Website: wilc2015.com/

Friday, April 17th

5:00 PM – Germany (Deutschland Adler) vs. Czech Republic “White”
8:00 PM – Ireland Developmental vs. Czech Republic “Red”

Saturday, April 18th

2:00 PM – Switzerland vs. Germany (Deutschland Adler)
5:00 PM – Finland vs. Czech Republic “Red”
8:00 PM – Israel vs. Ireland Developmental

Sunday, April 19th

11:00 AM – Switzerland vs Ireland Developmental
2:00 PM – Finland vs. Germany (Deutschland Adler)
5:00 PM – Israel vs. Czech Republic “Red”

Monday, April 20th

9:00 AM – Israel vs. Finland
12:00 PM – Switzerland vs. European All-Stars

The blue-and-white, who previously fell 16-6 to CLA Select in a one-off exhibition in Oakville, Ontario, in October, will see their first extensive international action as a national indoor program in the event.

Czech Republic “Red”, Israel’s Sunday opponent, is the favorite to sweep through the competition at the Invitational. The indoor (box) game is dominant in Czech Republic, and the “Red” squad will feature the Czechs’ stronger players, compared to the “White” squad of mostly developmental athletes. It will be the first meeting between Israel and Czech Republic internationally in any format, although Czech club Jižní Město defeated Tel Aviv LC, 4-2, in a first-round playoff game at the 2014 Aleš Hřebeský Memorial Tournament. Czech Republic is currently the FIL 4th-ranked nation in indoor lacrosse competition.

Although Ireland’s National Indoor Developmental program, which is competing under the banner of the Emerald Islanders, will be competing without several of their top players, such as NLL stars Stephen Keogh and Andrew McBride who are currently in-season, the Irish are expected to bring many athletes with strong box experience as they prepare for WILC2015. Israel and Ireland are familiar foes in the field game, meeting three times in the last three years, with Israel holding a 2-1 edge (two friendlies and one meeting at the 2014 World Championships). Ireland is currently the FIL 7th-ranked nation in indoor lacrosse competition.

Finland, like Israel, has never previously competed at the world indoor level and will be making their debut this year.

The Invitational is being held as a prelude to the 22nd Annual Aleš Hřebeský Memorial Tournament, in which Israel will be represented by Tel Aviv LC for the third consecutive year from April 22-25. Both the European Invitational and the Aleš Hřebeský Memorial will be utilized for national team evaluation and training purposes ahead of WILC2015.

Serbian Lacrosse Ready To Make a Showing at WILC 2015
Mark Donahue, Editor LaxAllStars.com

Serbia plans to move forward with competing in the 2015 WILC, now with Edmonton Outlaws owner Stu Sterparn as the head coach and Durham Turfdogs GM Jonas Derks as his assistant.
Experienced coaches aren’t the only thing positive addition to the Serbian lacrosse indoor national team, NLL superstars Ilija and Alex Gajic along with Nik Bilic are joing the roster to help lead the young Serbian team.

Recently while the Gajic brothers were visiting where their mother grew up in Serbia, the were able to connect with the local lacrosse scene. Having not brought their equipment, the were surprised to see how quickly they could pull gear together so they could hop in a game. Having spoken with Ilija about the experience, you could tell he was humbled and inspired by the passion of the Serbian nationals to improve at the sport he grew up loving.

We will catch up more with the Serbian indoor national team as September draws near. As I mentioned earlier, the best way to support their trip to Syracuse is by donating to their GoFundMe page (www.gofundme.com/fzwtw8).
